Long-form vs. Short-form... The Surprising Results

“Long-form or Shorts?” The Data Has the Answer
This is one of the most common dilemmas for creators trying to grow their YouTube channel.
"Should I make this a 10-minute video?" "Or just cut it into a Short?"
With Shorts blowing up recently, some even say, “Is long-form content dead?”
But when you look at the actual data, it's not a matter of choosing just one over the other.
The findings were surprisingly clear and a bit unexpected.
What 3,000 Channels Reveal About Video Formats
We analyzed 3,000 Korean YouTube channels with under 10,000 subscribers, comparing video length, impression growth, subscriber conversion rates, and comment engagement.
Summary of Findings:
- Long-form (7-15 min): Avg. 10 min / Views +9.8% / Subscribers +7.4% / Comment Engagement Rate 3.2%
- Shorts (under 1 min): Avg. 45 sec / Views +17.2% / Subscribers +3.1% / Comment Engagement Rate 0.6%
Shorts Get Views, Long-Form Builds a Fanbase
1. Shorts are an 'Impression Booster'
Short, fast-paced, and concise content gets surfaced much more frequently by the algorithm.
For new channels struggling with discoverability, Shorts are exceptionally effective for gaining initial impressions.
→ When your initial goal is to 'just get seen,' Shorts are the way to go.
2. Long-form Builds 'Relationships'
Likes, comments, and subscriber conversion rates are 2 to 5 times higher for long-form videos.
→ Long-form content is still what turns viewers into true fans.
72% of long-form comments consisted of "thoughts + feedback," while comments on Shorts were mostly brief reactions.
3. The Fastest-Growing Channels Do 'Both'
67% of rapidly growing channels were utilizing a mix of both long-form videos and Shorts.
- Attract new viewers with Shorts
- Retain them with long-form content
- Supplement with Community posts and other supporting content
→ This structure creates the most stable subscriber growth curve.
Strategies Based on Your Channel's Status
- For new channels needing exposure: Focus on Shorts → Gain views and attract algorithm traffic.
- If you have a weak fanbase and high viewer drop-off: Strengthen your long-form content → Build trust and increase watch time.
- If you're short on time: Aim for a 2:1 ratio of Shorts to long-form → A good tempo is 2 Shorts + 1 long-form video per week.
Shorts Spark the Fire, Long-Form Keeps It Burning
If you're only looking at view counts, Shorts come out on top.
But to build a lasting brand, long-form content is essential.
And the fastest-growing channels don't choose one over the other.
The channels that win are those that treat both formats with their own distinct strategy and tone.
