Will Adding ‘OOO’ to Your Title Boost Your Views?

“Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Write Titles Casually—Let Me Show You the Numbers”
Everyone knows you shouldn't just slap any title on your YouTube video.
The problem is, nobody actually tells you *what* to write or *how* to write it.
So, I did the research for you.
What words are hidden in the titles of high-performing videos?
“I Analyzed the Titles of 5,000 Videos with Over 100k Views”
I collected the titles of 5,000 videos from channels with fewer than 50,000 subscribers that gained over 100,000 views in the last six months.
Then, I extracted the words and sentence structures that appeared most frequently.
1. “Why” – A Word That Promises an Explanation
→ Sparks curiosity + Creates a question + Suggests a story
- “Why did this one sentence change my life?”
- “Why do you always end up buying this when you start living alone?”
- “Why do we get choked up at this scene?”
‘Why’ is a word that draws viewers in with the promise of an explanation. The feeling that it will reveal a cause led to a 1.7x higher click-through rate.
2. “This” – The Ambiguity That Creates Curiosity
→ Catches attention by concealing the subject
- “You're seriously missing out if you're not using this yet.”
- “Changing this one thing changed my life.”
- “This is the current state of my room LOL”
‘This’ is a technique that conceals just enough information to pique interest. It was found in 42 of the top 100 titles with the highest click-through rates.
3. “Seriously” / “Actually” – Emotion + Trust Combined
→ Creates a surprising reveal + Builds trust
- “Seriously? It's this effective?”
- “For real. If you live alone, you have to watch this.”
- “Seriously, this is how kids talk these days LOL”
The word ‘seriously’ (or ‘actually’) bundles emotion and fact together. It was used overwhelmingly in short-form videos like YouTube Shorts.
4. “You’re Missing Out if You Don’t Know” – Tapping into Instinct
→ An essential formula for informational content
- “You're seriously missing out if you don't know this feature.”
- “3 scams you'll definitely fall for if you're not aware.”
- “The money you keep losing without even realizing it.”
This phrase taps into our instinct to avoid loss (FOMO), boosting the CTR by over 1.5x.
5. “A Breakdown of [X] Types” – Making It Personal
→ Comparison + Categorization + Encourages self-identification
- “A Breakdown of Apartment Types for Solo Living.zip”
- “Types of Bosses at Work (feat. Ranked by Stress Level)”
- “A Breakdown of Dating Styles by MBTI Type”
The ‘breakdown’ or ‘summary’ format gives viewers a reason to watch to the end. It was particularly effective for slide-based Shorts, listicle-style videos, and animated explainers.
“Ultimately, It's Not About the Words—It's About the Emotion”
What’s truly important in a title isn’t the word itself, but the emotion and context it conveys.
High-performing titles have these things in common:
- They spark curiosity
- They conceal just enough
- They stir emotions
- They evoke a specific situation
It’s not that “Good Content = Good Title.” It’s that a good title is what allows your good content to be discovered in the first place.
